Jewellery designers were dealt a blow when the Golden Globes were considerably downsized due to the writer’s strike. This event, along with the Academy Awards, sets the trends for the coming year and provides a runway for many designers.

National Jeweler Network reports that the trends we will be seeing are:

Shorter Earrings: Shoulder brushing chandeliers will make way for shorter drop earrings and larger cluster-styles that lie on the earlobe.

Brooches: Pins are back into the forefront of fashion especially flowers and starburst-themed brooches.

Colours: Large smooth gemstones particularly in pink, blue and green. Cocktail rings remain a red-carpet favourite.

Yellow Gold: Platinum and white gold have been a mainstay of the big events but yellow gold is the choice of the bold, fashion-forward celebrity.

If you love that romantic pink look, these beautiful pink sapphire and diamond rings are for you.

According to the National Jeweler Network the smooth-stoned cocktail rings are making a comeback. This smooth cut is called the cabochon which is generally a coloured stone which is in a convex, rounded form, polished rather than facetted and is usually an oval shape.

An older, white haired man walked into a jewellery store one Friday evening with a beautiful young gal at his side. He told the jeweller he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend.

The jeweller looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring and showed it to him.

The old man said, "I don't think you understand, I want something very special."

At that statement, the jeweller went to his special stock and brought another ring over. "Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000," the jeweller said.

The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it."

The jeweller asked how payment would be made, and the old man stated, "By cheque. I know you need to make sure my cheque is good, so I'll write it now, you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds, and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon."

Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweller phoned the old man. "There's no money in that account."

"I know," said the old man, "but can you imagine the weekend I had?"
