Pearl is the birthstone for June
Ancient civilizations had many stories to explain the origin of June's birthstone, such as the Greek belief that pearls were the hardened tears of joy that the goddess of love shook from her eyes as she was born from the sea. According to Arab legend, pearls were formed when oysters were lured from the depths of the ocean by the beautiful moon and then swallowed moonlit dewdrops. The Ancient Chinese thought that these gems originated from the brains of dragons.
Natural pearls are created when an irritant lodges in the flesh of an oyster, mussel, or clam, and a protective substance called "nacre" is produced. Over years, nacre coats the irritant, creating a pearl. Natural pearls are relatively rare, so a process was created in which a piece of shell or bead was placed inside a mollusc to stimulate the production of nacre. This results in a cultured pearl, which accounts for about 90 per cent of the pearl industry.
Pearls have been ground up and used in cosmetics and as a medicine to treat heart and stomach conditions. Some cultures swear by pearls as an aphrodisiac. These gems have adorned crowns, clothing, and temples, and were said to be a favourite of Cleopatra.

We love a creative idea to propose!
A London floor installer, Lefkos Hajji, came up with a good one that flew out of his hands. The unlucky 28 year-old’s dreams of giving his chosen one, Leanne, 26, the perfect engagement proposal literally vanished into thin air. Hajji, of Hackney, east London, had concealed a 6,000-pound engagement ring inside a helium balloon. The idea was that she would pop the balloon as he popped the question. Unfortunately as he left the shop, a gust of wind pulled the balloon from his hand and he watched the engagement ring sail away over the rooftops. “I couldn’t believe it,” he told The Sun newspaper. “I just watched as it went further and further into the air. “I felt like such a plonker. It cost a fortune and I knew my girlfriend would kill me.” Hajji spent two hours in his vehicle trying to chase and find the balloon, without success. He is hoping the ring will still turn up. “It would be amazing if someone found it,” he added.
